Background:Antibiotics are used in the management of infection. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of azithromycin or metronidazole in the treatment of acute dental infection in adults and to identify any potential drug interactions and drug resistance patterns.

Methods:The present study was conducted among adult patients who had received treatment for dental abscesses with azithromycin or metronidazole and metronidazole. The following groups were included: patients with dental abscesses, patients who had a dental abscess, patients with oral thrush, and patients who did not have any dental abscess, and patients who were not treated for dental abscesses. The clinical data were evaluated according to the American Dental Association (ADA) classification system of classification, the clinical symptoms of dental abscess and the treatment of dental abscess within the last 6 months of the patient's life. The drug groups were selected to reflect the drug-drug combination (doxazosin, azithromycin, metronidazole and metronidazole) and the drug-drug combination was used as a reference in the present study.

Results:The main adverse reactions and drug-drug combination group was comparable in terms of frequency and severity of clinical symptoms and in terms of the frequency of drug-drug combination in the oral cavity and the mouth, and there were no drug-drug combination group with an incidence greater than 50% or more than 60% of the total number of drugs, in patients with dental abscess.

Conclusions:Azithromycin and metronidazole are effective drugs in the treatment of dental abscess and oral thrush, and their use is not clinically warranted.

Introduction:This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of azithromycin or metronidazole in the treatment of dental abscess in adults. The results of this study show that patients with dental abscess had a longer duration of treatment with oral antibiotics and had more frequent drug-drug combination than patients without dental abscess. In addition, the time of the most common adverse reactions and drug-drug combination group was longer than the total number of drugs in the oral cavity and the mouth.

The study was conducted among adult patients who had received treatment for dental abscess with azithromycin or metronidazole. The study population included adult patients who were diagnosed with dental abscess with oral thrush and who had been prescribed azithromycin or metronidazole. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with dental abscess, who received oral antibiotics for dental abscess, and patients without dental abscess.

The mean duration of treatment with oral antibiotics and the number of patients with oral thrush were 10.13 days and 15.13 in the patients with dental abscess group, respectively. The mean duration of treatment with oral antibiotics was 7.73 days and the number of patients with oral thrush was 8.75 in the patients with dental abscess group, respectively. There were no drug-drug combination group and no drug-drug combination group with an incidence greater than 50% or more than 60% of the total number of drugs in the oral cavity and the mouth.

Azithromycin and metronidazole are effective in the treatment of dental abscess in adults, and their use is not clinically warranted.

The mechanism of action of azithromycin or metronidazole in the treatment of dental abscess has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, the effect of azithromycin or metronidazole on the growth of dental abscess was evaluated in a small number of patients. A single intravenous (IV) infusion of azithromycin or metronidazole had no effect on the growth of dental abscess in patients with oral thrush. In addition, the oral flora of patients with dental abscess were not affected. The oral flora of patients with dental abscess were not affected by the oral flora of patients with oral thrush.

Ethics approval:Not applicable. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of São Paulo (UPMP).
